1. Overview
E85 Scout ("we") helps drivers find E85 and flex-fuel stations and share crowdsourced ethanol test results. This policy explains what data we collect, why we collect it, and what control you have over it. It applies to the E85 Scout app (including the web app at app.e85scout.com) and this website.
2. Information We Collect
Account information
When you create an account, we collect your email address, a username, and assign you a random user ID (a Supabase UUID). Using the app requires an account.
Content you submit
If you contribute to the community, we store what you submit: ethanol test results (the station, blend, measured ethanol percentage, and a photo of your test), station submissions, station reports and verifications, and your favorites. Please note that test photos are stored in a publicly accessible storage bucket — anyone with the photo's URL can view it, and the photo's file name includes your username — so don't include anything personal in the photo.
Location
The app uses your device's precise location to show nearby stations and sort results by distance. Your GPS location is processed on your device and is not stored on our servers or linked to your identity. Two related data flows do leave the device: the map downloads its tiles from CARTO, so CARTO receives ordinary web requests (your IP address and the map area you're viewing, which typically follows your location); and if you type an address into the search bar, that address text is sent to Google's Geocoding API to convert it into map coordinates and is also recorded as a search event in our analytics.
Analytics
We use Firebase (Google Analytics) to understand how the app is used. This collects usage data and device information — including in-app search terms — with IP anonymization enabled. Analytics event data is retained for 2 months and user-level data for 14 months. We do not use analytics data for cross-app tracking or targeted advertising. The only identifier tied to analytics is your Supabase user UUID — never your email address.
Separately, to count how many people actually use E85 Scout, our own backend records the days on which you open the app — your user ID and the date, one row per day, nothing else about the session. This is not shared with anyone and is not used for advertising.
We also use PostHog (PostHog's US cloud) for product analytics, starting with sponsored links. In the app, PostHog receives events such as "a sponsor link was shown" and "a sponsor link was tapped", with the sponsor, the station it appeared on, where in the app it appeared, your platform (iOS or web) and the app version. These events are tied to your Supabase user UUID — never your email address — and are sent only while you're signed in; the app keeps no device identifier for them. Your IP address is discarded and no location is derived from it. On this website, station pages send the same kind of sponsor-link events anonymously: a random ID that lasts only for that page view, the page address and its city and state — no cookies, no local storage and no profile. PostHog keeps this data for up to one year on our current plan.
Sponsored links
Some stations and station pages show a clearly labeled sponsor link (for example, a recommended tuner shop near that station). Which sponsor appears depends only on the station's location, not on anything about you. We count how often a sponsor link is shown and tapped so we can report results to the sponsor — sponsors receive only aggregate totals, never your identity. The link itself carries campaign tags describing where it was shown, never an identifier for you, and we don't combine this data with data from other companies.
3. How We Use Information
We use the information above to:
- Operate the app and show you nearby stations.
- Display crowdsourced station data, such as aggregated ethanol percentages from community tests.
- Moderate submissions — test photos are reviewed before approval, including automated LLM-assisted verification, to keep station data trustworthy.
- Send account emails (like email verification) and occasional product updates via Resend. Every marketing email includes an unsubscribe link.
We don't sell your data, and we don't share it with third parties for advertising. Sponsors receive only aggregate counts of how often their link was shown and tapped.
4. Third-Party Services
E85 Scout is built on a small number of service providers, each of which processes data under its own privacy policy:
- Supabase — database, authentication, and photo storage.
- Google Firebase Analytics — usage analytics (as described above).
- PostHog — product analytics, including sponsor-link views and taps (US cloud; IP addresses discarded).
- Google Geocoding — converts typed address searches into map coordinates.
- CARTO / OpenStreetMap — map tiles (receives your IP and map viewport, like any website you visit).
- OpenRouter — automated AI review of submitted test photos (the photo and submitted ethanol % are sent for verification).
- Resend — account and product-update emails.
- Featurebase — our feedback portal, only if you choose to use it.
This website serves its fonts and styles from our own servers. It loads Google Tag Manager (for the analytics described above) and requests live public statistics (station and test counts) from our Supabase backend — both receive standard web-request data (such as your IP address). Station pages also send the anonymous sponsor-link events described above to PostHog. If you subscribe to product updates on the homepage, the email address you enter is sent to our Supabase backend and stored with our email provider, Resend.
5. Data Retention & Deletion
We keep your account data for as long as your account is active.
You can delete your account at any time in the app (Info → Delete Account). Deleting your account permanently removes your account, email address, username, favorites, reports, pending and rejected test submissions, and all photos you uploaded. We also remove your email address from our mailing list (and every email we send includes an unsubscribe link, in case anything slips through).
Ethanol test results that were already published (approved, or flagged for further review) are retained anonymously — they are no longer linked to any identity — so that station data stays accurate for other drivers. Stations you submitted likewise remain in the database, no longer linked to you. Analytics events already recorded under your user UUID are not deleted with the account; once the account is gone that UUID no longer leads to any identity, and the events expire with the retention periods above.
6. Your Rights
You can access, correct, or delete your data. Account deletion is self-serve in the app (see above). For anything else — access requests, corrections, or questions about this policy — reach us through our feedback portal at e85scout.featurebase.app or by email at [email protected].
7. Children
E85 Scout is not directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has created an account, contact us via the feedback portal or at [email protected] and we'll remove it.
8. Changes to This Policy
If we change this policy, we'll update this page and the effective date at the top. Significant changes may also be announced in the app.
